Shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, a lone person
robbed Guaranty Bank in Idyllwild.
The suspect is described as a white male between
his late teens to late 20s wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, white hat
with a black checkered-type design and sunglasses. He entered the bank,
showed what appeared to be a handgun and demanded
money.
The suspect was last seen running from the bank
with an undisclosed amount of cash. No one was hurt during the
robbery.
As of 10 p.m. Wednesday, no arrest had been made,
but Detective Dave Josker, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, said
the suspect apparently knows the area.
Wednesday night, deputies searched the
neighborhood around South Circle Drive and Bicknell Lane. Some
residents, unaware of what had occurred, were startled to see an armed
deputy moving through backyards.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact
Josker at (951) 791-3423.

Climate change affecting mountains
By J.P. Crumrine, Assistant
Editor
According to two University of California, Irvine (UCI) researchers,
vegetation surveys — 30 years apart — in the Santa Rosa Mountains
demonstrate the gradual shifting of plant ranges up the mountains. Anne
E. Kelly and Michael L. Goulden’s paper, “Rapid shifts in plant
distribution with recent climate change,” was published online in this
week’s Proceedings of the National Association of Science.
Global warming and climate change are no longer theoretical forces
foreign to the Hill. Nor are they political issues embedded in the
debates between Republicans and Democrats.
Concentrating on the 10 most widely distributed plants in the Deep
Canyon area, Kelly and Goulden discovered that the plant species were
moving toward higher elevations. Over the 30-year period from 1977 to
2007, various plant communities’ starting range, including Jeffrey
Pine, moved about 212 feet up the mountainside.
Contractors want IFPD action
By J.P. Crumrine,
Assistant Editor
Four local contractors have written forcefully
and directly to Glen McWilliams, Idyllwild Fire Protection District
(IFPD) president, not only aking him to place the subject of IFPD’s
abatement contractor on the commission’s agenda for Aug. 26, but asking
the commission to terminate the contract with Fire Prevention Services
Inc. (FPSI) immediately.
As of Monday evening, IFPD Chief Steve Kunkle
confirmed the letter’s arrival but said it had not been opened.
McWilliams did not return phone calls.
Randy Owen of Mountain Fire Abatement, Emily Pearson
of Pearson Tree Service, Jacobus Piño of Piño Tree
Service and Josh Whitney of Pacific Slope all signed the Aug. 8 letter.
They object to IFPD’s failure to use a competitive
bidding process when it awarded the contract to FPSI in February.

Sponsors give big to
Jazz in the Pines
This year’s Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines sponsors have pledged
generously to continue funding the Associates of Idyllwild Arts
Foundation, which provides scholarships to talented students from
around the world who attend Idyllwild Arts.
The Associates also recruit more than 300 volunteers who prepare and
will work the 15th-annual Jazz in the Pines.
“As we go through the process of planning Jazz in the Pines, we often
pause to realize that each dollar raised will be used for scholarships
to nearly half of the students who attend Idyllwild Arts. It is crucial
to support the ongoing funding of art and music schools, which ensure
that young gifted children have every opportunity to pursue their
passion in life,” said Jeff Hocker, Jazz in the Pines executive
producer.
